For any type of automotive paint, the minimum temperature should be 55° F; however, most paint companies recommend you to be above 70° F with a relative humidity of 50%.
Beyond that, the type of paint can also impact the temperature requirements. If you’re using waterborne paint, you want to have around 75° F or 5° F hotter than the outside temperature surrounding the booth. If it’s 80° F outside, set it to 85° F.
However, if you’re using paint that’s solvent-based, you don’t want to exceed the surrounding outside temperature. If It’s 80° F outside, your booth should be set at 80° F on the inside. If you try to dry solvent-based paint too fast, you’ll end up with flaws in the finish that can lead to brittleness, cracks, and poor paint jobs.
Curing Paint On A Vehicle: Best Temperatures For Your Paint Booth
For every 15° F above 70° F, the paint will cure twice as fast; however, for every 15° F below 70° F, it will cure twice as slow (and this rules applies to both painting and curing). However, this rule only applies for 55° F and above. If it’s any lower than 55° F, the heating catalyst will not work properly because will become dormant (and subsequently causing the cross link to never work properly).
No matter what, while the average temperature should be around 70° F, the paint you use and the ambient temperatures outside of the booth play a massive role. Beyond that, always take into consideration the relative humidity. You’ll always want it to be around 50% to get the fastest painting and curing times possible.
